Still, I just had to check in here again.. just saw there's again a TS going on - don't think I'll finish reading it today (almost 2am), but if there's even a tiny bit of creativity left in me, I'll come up with a post...
I haven't been writing fantasy for a while now, and would be good to do it again...
Don't really have an apology for just having disappeared out of a sudden, except that after a year of university, it finally brought about some major changes. Plus, a few months ago I discovered the joys of MMORPGs - Dark Age of Camelot to be exact, and getting my pretty Elf Nightshade to level 50 is quite time-consuming (46.5 - not much more to go, then I'll tear Albion and Midgard players apart with my 'leet stealth/assasin skillz!! Hibernia all the way! I mean, who couldn't like a realm with Elves in it.. and Lurikeen.. and Firbolgs.. and Shar.. and Sylvans.. </addict rambling> ^^)
Well, anyway, I hope everyone here is fine, and nobody minds me checking back in.
Oh, er, and hello again.

I tried a text-based MUD based on Eddings' Belgariad a while back, but I never really got into it much; a fancy-graphical one like that is probably beyond my system's ability to handle. If I ever found a multiplayer roguelike game, then I think I'd be quick to fall
Interesting, though, that it should mix things up like that. The only one of those races that really belongs in Hibernian (Irish) mythology is the Fir Bolgs, and those are the enemies of the gods. Elves are properly Norse (Midgard); denizens of Ælfheim, the highest and lightest of the realms. Sylvans I would associate more with Albion (England), as they sound like forest fairies or something like that. I have no clue what the Lurikeen or Shar are, so those are likely invented. </rambling>

Shar are probably invented though, a race of half-aquatic beings.

The races of Hibernia are those I already mentioned plus the Celt, the ones of Albion are Britons, Saracens, Avalonians, Highlanders (they had only human races at the start of the game), Inconuu (freaky small things with blue skin and weird ears), and Half-Ogres, and the Midgard races are the Norse, Dwarves, Trolls (stone-creature trolls, not big-and-ugly trolls), Kobolds, Valkyn (sort of half-man, half-dog), and now the Frostalfs.
Each realm has different classes, too - Hibernia has the most mages, Midgard the most fighters, and Albion... is somewhere in between, I guess. (They do have 3 stealth classes instead of just two like the others, though.)

Actually, there are Elves in Irish mythology - the Norse probably stole them... Lurikeen are Irish too - small creatures who look a little like elves.
Shar are probably invented though, a race of half-aquatic beings.
Hmm, don't remember coming across either of them...

Of course, "Valkyn" sounds like it should be Valkyries, but I suppose that wouldn't work well as a player race, would it? Kobolds are more Germanic than Norse, I believe. And I also seem to remember reading that "Dark Elves," according to the Norse, were ugly and turned to stone in sunlight... Trolls? Scary thought, isn't it? That Elves and Trolls are basically the same race...
Then again, Tolkien works along similar lines - Orcs are corrupted elves; goblins, humans; trolls, ents.

No-one would remember me though - I posted very little... This was when Cythera was still fairly popular.
Theo Nean Donly's name definitely rings numerous bells though. Aren't you involved in the old programming game, Robowar?
I've just realised that most of us posting here are oldbies, we signed up in 2000.

Haha, crazy connections, no? Yeah, I've basicly taken on the maintenence of RoboWar, as Lucas went missing for years and only recently came back. He has talked about coming back and working on robowar again for a while, but hasn't done anything more than build a new, incomplete webpage. Mine is still probably the most complete at the moment. http://parallax.chpa.../games/robowar/
And I've costarted a robowar forums at http://forums.chpau.net
Drop by, anyone interested is welcome, just to say hi or anything. I need to work at increasing board membership.

The Robowar community is very similar to the Gamemaker community (both near death, although GM is in a slightly better state) - and I've lurked beneath the surface of both of these for several years.
I have actually made some bots - all of them inefficient, simplistic, and unlikely to stand up to whatever people are coming up with nowadays. In fact, the only one that can even get into the winners circle in tournament 19 is called Flying Scotsman, a Mudshark(ish) type bot... heh, this is getting really off topic...
I'll probably find out that you were involved with Gamemaker now.
