opening mage locked coffer

I have the coffer with the strange device in it, but I can't open it, I stupidly lost the scroll that teaches that - suggestions? can I bash it open? have tried with the hero's sword and a mace, but no luck yet.

I seem to remember it being possible to destroy coffers with a mace, mage lock and all. You just need to be persistent.
