Hello, I am new here. I registered on these boards just to be able to post here in the Cythera forums. I love Cythera, in fact, it's my favorite game ever. Well, anyways, I have been playing Cythera since it was brand new, (almost) I found it on a CD-ROM from a Mac world magazine, and it was the first game I installed on that computer. It was sometime in december, '99. It was version 1.0.3, which was released in November, '99. So I suppose it was pretty new then. I played it and I was amazed! It was such a wonderful game, I loved the perspective, it was much like the one in an old NES game.... Robin Hood, I think.

The atmosphere was fantastic! Even though it was just a 2D game with .... Not the greatest graphics and quality of sound (but still great) the feeling was better than any other game I have ever played. The music was WONDERFUL, even though it was just MIDI. Everything was perfect. And I thought, this is definately the second best game I have ever played. My favorite game then was Ys. But I didn't register the game, and the time ran out, (to be honest, I had the game for 50 days instead of 30, I just couldn't remove it, sorry). But I removed it because of several reasons. Two weeks ago, I got a new Mac, and this thuesday, I installed Cythera again. First, I was a little dissapointed, it wasn't as fun as I had imagined for three years.... (I had been thinking of this game ever since I removed it). After a couple of hours I realized.... I was playing! I had been playing for three hours, without even noticing! I was stuck again. Cythera was back! I played the whole next day, until 2:30 AM. It came to my mind, Cythera was better than Ys. I played and played and played, finishing probably everything possible in the demo. Downloaded the autumn patch, played some more, finding more secrets....

Now, today, I am pretty sure that there's NOTHING left to play, so I have decided to register Cythera as soon as I get the money. (I don't have any $$$ yet, gotta get some) (I live in Sweden, remember?).

Now, I have to compliment the authors of Cythera.

I can't understand that one single person can make such a wonderful game as Cythera. Just play the game, listen to what everyone has to say, and read every single book you can find! Stories, wonderful stories.... Everywhere! How can a person come up with such amazing stories, and so many! It's completely fantastic! Glenn Andreas is an awesome person. First, he creates a perfect game engine, the Delver engine, tell me anything that's NOT possible to do with it! You can even bake bread! Then, he creates the most wonderful, perfect game that has ever been, THEN he makes incredibly great stories to put in the game! And tell me, WHO could POSSIBLY even TRY to resist to find the source of Kesh, or the Harpy egg.... WHO could stop playing Cythera if you are stuck? Of COURSE you must try and try and TRY until you find the answer to what you're trying to solve! The feeling in the game, it isn't possible to describe with words.... I know what I think of it, but I can't describe it, it's .... simply, wonderful! I dare to say, that Glenn Andreas is a better game maker than Shigeru Miyamoto himself! And I really, really mean it.

The music by Randy Pringle is awesome, how he could make such great music, which fits into the enviroment that great, can only mean one thing, he is one TALENTED composer, and could easily overcome Koji Kondo or ANY other game music composer. The music is great, wonderful.

And Andrew Welch's sound effects, they're so cool, and I don't get how he made them, they are awesome, listen to the Gator roar, for instance, great.

Marcus Conge and Glenn Andreas made a perfect job, making those graphics, they are awesome, and they couldn't possibly get any better or cooler. I am sure it was really hard to make them look so good in that angle, but they made it perfectly, great work.

If I have missed someone now, I'm sorry, I can't think of anything more to say, other than that you all did a great work, making Cythera! I will support you a little by registering the game, and last, but not least, I will populate these forums for you. I will not post much until September, however. Now, good night all!

No matter what anybody says about it, it's still worth every penny of the $30 dollar registration fee. People like you need to email Mr. Andreas or Mr. Welch and bug them until they carbonize it at least. Oh, by the way, if the new computer you're running it on has OSX, always switch your startup disk to OS 9 before playing. There's something about the game that doesn't like running on Classic under OSX. I found it not only doesn't play the music correctly, it has a tendency to corrupt the saved game files. Just a tip.

[exit_hiding]Whoa. Seldane...if you have programming experience, I bet you could convince Mr. Andreas to let you Carbonize the engine: In order to make the game carbonized, which is near impossible, you would need to carbonize the engine, or so I hear from Bryce...I think. I would talk to him for more details.

Yes, I stil play Cythera under OS 9, and you're right in every regard Seldane. The game itself had me (and still does) enthralled for months trying to solve all the problems. I often find myself rather caught in the newer games of today, things with graphics and 50 different "lands" and items with a zillion and one character altering stastics; every so often I play Cythera and realise again what it means to play a perfect game, to become totally immeresed in such a brilliant world.

Three cheers for Glenn and the team! Posted Image

Hardly 'near impossible', although Ambrosia seems to be pushing that idea about carbonization... unless Cythera has a reliance on the few toolbox functions that didn't make the cut in carbon or something.
But yes, the Delver engine would need to be carbonized for Cythera to become mac-os X ready. I wouldn't think the actual Cythera scenario (That big datafile that comes with the game) would need changes except for bug fixes.

Hopefully, Mr. Andreas is busy on his next game, so I'd rather not bug him about doing the carbonization himself. It is an idea to get one of us to do it, but I think Cythera is in C++ whereas I know only C... What about Slayer? That would be the ultimate way for him to achive imortality in the community Posted Image

I have a job where I do nearly all of my work in C++, but I have no experience with the Macintosh Toolbox (nor Winblows API, for that matter). I definitely would like to see someone Carbonize Cythera, though.

Is there a C++ programer that knows the Carbon Toolbox in the house?

Not me, I don't even know what that is!

....And well, I only know C. A little. Not much though.

I certainly hope that the Cythera -> PC project was cancelled. I don't want to see Cythera on PC. That wouldn't be nice. You gotta be a Mac user to play the best game in the world. Best com - best game, that's a good combo.

Ambrosia is spreading out... but I sincerely doubt that you would be able to play any Ambrosia game on Windows before you could play it on OSX. I don't think there's much to worry about there.

I would continue to play Cythera myself, but it just doesn't work on classic under osx. :

I think carbonizing Cythera would do a lot for it's community. A sort of revival. Hell, I'd pay for an osx version update. Wouldn't you?

It's not like the other games that won't be carbonized. Ares, Ferazel, etc, they all work fine under classic. Cythera doesn't.

There already is a version of Cythera for PC. It's called "Ultima VII". Posted Image

Yes. I know.... He he ---- But, isn't it Ultima VI? I think so....

(Ultima III isn't so far from Cythera either).
But Cythera beats Ultima's hands down. Easily.
