one of my mates told me about it and I really want to bring something to the boards. I'd love to join and post and so on, but I'm not quite sure about the story etc. So if you wouldn't mind helping me and if you want a new member, would you mind taking a minute to explain to me how to go about things? Thanks.

Welcome to the webboards Nixus!
At the moment the Cythera webboards are in a bit of a depression, and ANY members are welcome here, indeed, encouraged.
An important aspect of the Cythera Webboard is that, although related to the game itself, the only thing you really need to know about Cythera itself is the names of the cities, the general lay out of the map, and occasionally some important names. All of this information can be found in Slayers excelent guide to Cythera.
Almost all posters on our webboards here have one or more characters, which they will generally play as in a Team Story. A team story is a kind of group story which people simply post onto whenever they feel in the writing mood. Peoples posts usually concern their own character, and (to a lesser extent) other peoples characters as well. There are lots of unwritten laws concerning other peoples characters and how you involve them in your post which you'll have no trouble picking up. If you're feeling uneasy try reading a few team stories from the Best of Cythera boards.
Other then Team Stories, there is the Tavern (I think that's the latest one), which is pretty much a free for all topic; a very good place to start Team Stories, introduce characters, post spam .
So, we have the TS's, Tavern, now for the Chronicles.
A chronicle is a short story, or collection of stories written by one author instead of several different ones. The Chronicles on Cythera webboard are exceptionally good, so good infact, that we have a chronicle of the month competition. Each month a selection of the chronicles submitted are voted upon, and the winner gets their name engraved in the board of honour.
The last topic type I can think of is other topics . Things like people asking questions about the game in general, the webboards, commenting on various things etc etc.
I suppose I should stop rambling on and let some one else have a go, but if you feel like introducing your character to the boards, then I suggest posting about him/her/it here.
I hope you enjoy the Cythera Webboards Nixus!

I do not suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.
