For those interested in cartography for fantasy role playing or war games, or just want to play around with my latest project, and you are running OS X 10.2*, have a look at "MapScribe", the start of a computer cartography program. Since this was written in Cocoa, it will never be ported back to OS 9.
It can be found at [url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/gandreas/FileSharing.html"]http://homepage.mac....ileSharing.html[/url] - note that the .dmg is encrypted with a password, but I'm sure everybody here knows what the LandKing's name is (all in lower case)
This version is just a very early pre-release, available only for a limited time. Eventually the goal is to relese both a free "lite" version (capable of only one page maps) and a commercial "pro" version (with a bunch of extra features).
At some point, I'll release an official Cythera map done with it... (the "lite" version will be able to view/print "pro" documents, but not modify them).
*it might work with 10.1, but I haven't bothered to try...

Sounds like a nice idea Mr. Andreas.
I'll download it even though I don't have 10.2 yet becuase it's for a limited time only!
Since I can't try it yet, may I ask if it could be used for non-fantasy RPGs? (I.e. it has the ability to accept import custom tiles/graphics)

Yes - right now the graphic selection is quite limited (some trees, hills, mountain, and some circles for towns). You can drag & drop any image onto the map, and it is fairly straightforward to make a plugin with other "tokens" and paint. Basically just a bundle with the images as either PDF or TIFF files and a list in the info.plist that describes what they are.
This is still subject to change, but that basic functionality will remain (right now, the only thing build into the source is the fact that "paper" is white, everything else comes from plugins).
It is initially geared toward outdoor maps of the world, but nothing should stop it from working with interiors (it provides both a hexagonal and square grid).

I've updated mapScribe to PreRelease 2, still found at [url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/gandreas/FileSharing.html"]http://homepage.mac....ileSharing.html[/url] sitll with the password being the LandKing's name in lower case.
This version includes a ton of new features (text notes, rotation of stuff, clipping, arbitrary textual attrbiutes and links associated with objects, etc...), as well as a bunch of bug fixes, and other tweaks and improvements all around.
Hopefully the next version will include more random generation tools (to randomly generate worlds/continents, towns/cities/villages, dungeons, caves, etc...) and "composite layer documents" as well as some more support utilities.
Any suggestions, comments, whatever - now's the time to make them
