ATTN: Minor changes to the Community
#1
Posted 18 March 2002 - 06:43 PM
Slayer and I have decided a few minor changes should take place, and now that the server's capabilities have changed, its a good time to implement those changes now.
Karma will no longer be handed out for just any chronicle submitted. Slayer will decide if the chronicle is good enough, or is from a person that is showing improvement in their writing skills, and Slayer will hand out karma appropriately. Also, a really good long chronicle has a better chance of recieving more karma than a really good short chronicle, as the longer chronicle requires more effort and work. Keep in mind that a longer really bad chronicle is no different than a short really-bad chronicle, its just longer.
As for topic limits, andrew has dropped the 200 posts per topic because the new server is capable of handling such a load. The Team Stories can now go on as long as they need to, but the tavern will continue to be cut off at 200 posts. That way it can be archived in segments over time.
Furthermore, we would really appreciate it if people would stop reading upcoming chronicles, etc. We know how to do our jobs, we don't need advice about which parts need editing or how much karma the author should get...its our job, not yours! Slayer and I have decided to start cracking down on people that publically discuss stuff in the admin section. (this includes the Pending Chronicles)
To end on a lighter note, it looks as if the new server may provide some neat surprises in the next few months. (you'll have to find out on your own, right now its a secret )

Personally, I've never read a pending chronicle except at the author's request (i.e. Bryce), and also excepting that chronicle, which shall remain nameless - and, I hope, forever unreleased.
I like the idea of raising the standard for the issuing of karma points; perhaps it might inspire some of us to raise our standards also.

Oh dear, I hope so too!
I don't like reading chronicles before they're released, it's like cheating. Is it possible to track who -visits- the boards, even if they don't view any topics?

I think I aggree about *reading* chrons, but I see no harm in seeing how many chrons are in the que. It gives you a feel for demand, and if you have to rush the chron out the door or leave it in the oven until well done.

Then again, in the past Slayer has always warned us when there is a lack of chronicles. You could simply trust his judgement.
The point is this viewing of places that should not be viewed needs to stop. It never should have been discovered. People just need to learn how to wait for something to be released pulically.

That isn't much work. Hey, a regular ol' user can do it.

I was thinking more of a comparison IP search, as an infringement of that magnitude is possibly grounds for an IP ban.

Obviously not, security was breached there before and no password protection was added. Therefore, it's *maybe* karma slap material.

Its not password protected as then only people with the password could post there. Therefore, only moderators would be allowed to submit chronicles...and having to email the mods so they can post the chronicles defeats the purpose of the board. Therein lies the problem with UBB.
The point is, viewing it is a breach of a privacy code. Andrew will take action, it may be minescule, or it may be severe. Bottom line: do not view the Pending Chronicles.
