I'm in that cave under Alaric's castle and I don't know what protects mw from falling rocks. Hector and Meleader sure don't help me much. They just get lost and I have to find them to get them to protect me from ooze and ratizards.
P.S. Why don't the beggars in that place Bellerophon used to live talk to me? Why is the place even special?

Try wearing a helmet. Logical enough.
Also, I think you can poke the ceiling to disarm falling rocks. Don't ask me how.

I do have the helmet. My helmet's better than all the others. But I still get hurt.

I have no clue who this Machaon is. Is he in Pnyx? Maybe he's that guy in the ruins above Cademia, only he won't talk to me.

Mage Machaon is not the one in the ruins. He isn't in the game (you can't meet him), but he used to live in Cademia and he has a lab under Cademia. When you enter the city just find the room with the mushrooms and in the other room there is a secret door. Open it and go down the ladder. You'll need to flip some levers there to open the passage to the lab. I suggest you use the magical map from Omen to see which lever opens the right gate. So when you open the final two gates kill the golem there and find the dresser, then search the kilt. The ring will appear on the floor after. When you wear it it does the same as spell Resist Blows only for all times.
Also I suggest you take the lyre found in the dresser. You'll find it useful later in... Well if you want to know where just ask.
