I've been thinking about this recently, and I want to see some more perspectives on it.
Avernum and Cythera are both worthy games. But which should I actually buy? Cythera has a good story, but it has mediocre graphics at best and other minor issues. Avernum is based on Jeff Vogel's classic RPG Exile; it utilizes an enhanced version of the engine used in Nethergate. I'm at an impasse here - will someone advise me?

I would heartily recommend paying for both games, but if you are strapped for cash, then go for Avernum. If you enjoyed the Exile series (and I can't see why not), then you will appreciate what Jeff Vogel has done in re-creating his world. All of Avernum's side quests assist the player in level building, etc. (a good thing, because fighting Grah-Hoth is no walk in the park!), which is something that Cythera makes virtually irrelevant by making the major quests easy to beat with relatively low levels.
Still, Cythera is a very enjoyable game, and if you can buy both, then do so. I'm sure Mr. Andreas would endorse that bit of advice!

Give me any game.
I will find all its secrets.
I will devour it.
