Use the spell on someone before you engage him or her in conversation, and then immediately talk to them.
While you're talking, keep an eye on the bottom part of the window; it'll clue you in to when someone's not being truthful.
Bear in mind, though that some "truths" are more true than others. This is why you can't catch Pelagon in a lie. He's being absolutely truthful about standing right before you, when you accuse him of being dead. (He never says he's not dead, though...)

The belt makes you stronger.
I thought you could have two pieces of the crolna before you register. I might be confused.

Regardless, I believe you only need one piece of crolna in order to break the barrier down to get to the Seldanes.

One thing I am certain of: It takes only one shard for the standing stones, but two for the force walls.

I know this is a really old topic, but you can have two Crolna shards before registering. I used remote manipulation on the hole un LKH and then used the southern teleporter to go to swamp ruins and went into the temple before the guard could stop me. Then it took me a really long time to fetch the force walls, but they were all destroyed and I explored and got my second shard. I still need to register, though.

If you look at magic in cythera in the documentation program, one of the screen shots has the spells closing the veil and removing the veil. What do these spells do and where can you get them? also I am already a member of the ratcathers guild but how do I get to the sewer?

The 'veil' spells, as well as a couple others were (to the best of my knowledge) removed from the final game. Perhaps only GAndreas himself knows why.
As for the sewer, there are a number of entrances. The easiest one to find is by the castle. Just enter the pipe by one of the guard stations.
