Uses of Runic Magic

Has anyone had occasion to use their runic magic skills? I've played Cythera a couple of times now, and I've yet to find a need for learning runic magic. Has anyone has used or detected a rune anywhere, and where?

Though I've learned all the runic spells, I've never bothered using them except to test them out.
