I'm lost as to how to distill things .....

I've learnt alchemy so I presume I'm capable ....

Well, the magess that teaches alchemy gives you instructions on how to make potions when you learn alchemy from her. You fill the distiller with water, then use the distiller on whatever element you want to distill. There's a book (I think in the main library at the Magisterium) that tells you what elements you need for basic potions. As with any magic, if your magic level is too low, you won't be able to do alchemy. But in that case just wait a while and try again.

The book is the open one lying on the shelf in the library.
