Part One: The Horizon Nears
And so it had been. The New Empire was established. Peace was upheld. Cythera was prosperous. Of course something had to be done about that.
Rulir Dragonsbane sat fishing on the coastal wall of the south fortress. The fish weren’t biting, and Rulir didn't know why. The sun was hot, and the sky completely blue. "Bread, milk, flour..." he went over his groceries aloud. Life was good. Before he knew it, Rulir had dozed off.
"Uncle Rulir! Uncle Rulir! What's that?"
"Oh no... Achra is making a mess again," he thought without getting up. Rulir's niece was a pain to say the least. "What is she into now? The metal stores? Hopefully not the weapons... Oh well, I had better get up and see..."
Rulir rolled over to tried to get up. As he did, he noticed his surroundings had become a bit more wet, as it usually does when you fall off of the wall into high tide. Gasping for air, Rulir climbed the ladder next to where he was sitting. As he reached the top, he was surprised to see his niece sitting on the wall... not ten feet from where he was sleeping.
"What's what honey?" he asked in a wet tone of voice.
"That." Achra pointed off the coast toward the horizon.
"There's nothing there sweetie," he said hardly looking.
"Yes there is! Right there! See!?" She moved her pointing finger from side to side.
Rulir turned around and sat on the wall. He looked out, towards the ocean. He could see that the sea was moving at the edge of his vision.
"It's just a storm, honey. We'd better pack everything up and go inside."
"Fire doesn't come out of a storm, silly!" Achra said with disturbing lack of concern.
"Fire? What fire?" Rulir asked. Just then, he realized what she had meant. A small fireball shot out of a wave, dissipating in mid-air. Another followed shortly after it. "Uh-oh, this doesn't look good."
"What is it Uncle Rulir?"
"I don't know, let me get a better look."
Rulir swung his feet over the wall and jumped to the ground. He ran inside his house, about ten yards away. "Where did I put that..." He pushed through mounds of metal, looking for his closet. "There it is." He opened it, on one of the shelves lay a spyglass. The wizard picked it up and ran quickly back to the wall.
"Let’s look a bit closer." He gazed through it, twisting the end piece to bring it into focus. "There!" he thought. He gasped. "This definitely doesn't look good."
"Uncle Rulir! What is it?"
"I’m not sure honey, but we’d better get packed," said Rulir.
"Where are we going?"
"To the Pnyx, seat of the New Empire," he said.
"What for?" the young girl asked.
"Like I said," he said without turning away from the spyglass, "this doesn't look good."
With that, Rulir pulled Achra inside the house, and began packing his equipment.
To be continued... soon.
