As the arrow buried itself in my body, I experienced a painful numbness never before felt. Rapid images flashed before my eyes. I could see my entire life as I fell backwards. I could even see all the fatal steps that led me into this deadly trap.

>Flash<
A tavern. The darkest corner. A heated discussion. "You moron. No way I'm trusting you with that amount of oboloi." A squeaky voice: "Idiot. I'm your only way out of this mess. Let me take the money to the loanshark or you'll be dead by the weekend."

As the third man I sat silent. This wasn't my fight. Being bodyguard for the kingpin of crime in Odemia normally meant that I had to sit through diverse arguments, quarrels, brawls, fights and sometimes outright battles. It was only in the last event that my services were needed.

This time I had another reason to keep quiet. My employer was more upset than I'd ever seen. He must be in deep trouble, otherwise he wouldn't be talking to the squeaky man.

My boss argued: "Listen you weasel. I want your help to get out of Odemia without the Land King's soldiers finding me. I'm not interested in letting you act as my middleman."

The squeak: "And how do you propose that I'll manage that? The soldiers search every carriage and wagon leaving town, they are relentless. And since they closed the harbor for the rest of the month you're stuck here."

I guess that the squeaky smuggler felt that he had all cards in his favour.
"Okay. I accept. But then Chio here will follow you." I was startled when I heard my name mentioned. I'd never before been asked to run errands for him.

>Flash<
We're on our way. The smuggler and I ride out of town. My boss has instructed me to be wary of foul play.
"You know that I have to pay off my debt this week, or I'm done for. Take these oboloi to Cademia and release me from my debt."
No problem. The weasel doesn't pose any threat to me.
"You know that the soldiers are looking for me. I can't get out of town. But you're not wanted for anything yet. You have to help me."

We rested at a scruffy place, the Alraeican Tavern, on our way. It was full of strange characters, fighting and quabling between themselves. A whole bunch of midgets called Tycho Mauds ran around beneath the tables and got throdden on.
After a night without getting any sleep due to all from the loud noises from the dining hall, we set out again. Later we heard that the tavern had burned down, or had been destroyed by an avalanche, whichever came first.

My companion wanted us to take the shorter route throught the woods, but I didn't fancy that idea. It would seem to be and excellent place for ambushes.

We followed the coast instead. That night someone tried to raid our camp. I was woken up by muffled sounds of fighting. The weasel was fighting with a dark figure.
I jumped up and drew my sword. "Come on, ye creatures of darkness!" Slashing at the dark figure yielded a shout.

Out of the darkness came more people. I turned and cut another one. A spear appeared out of nowhere and I barely deflected it.

I kicked out some logs from the fire against some of the attackers. A mantle caught fire, the person screamed.

The rest of the attackers fell back as they witnessed their friends getting fried and ran through by my sword.

>Flash<
The weasel was silent after the attack. We rode slowly along the road. Up ahead we were forced to pass a rocky field.

Getting closer to the rocks made the weasel fall back a little. I rode ahead. Among the stones I was suddenly surrounded by cloaked men. The weasel was nowhere to be seen.
"Hand over that saddlebag!"
"Prepare to die!" I answered and reared my horse with drawn sword. At the peak of the rise I heard the twang of a bow. The arrow hit me in the chest.

>Flash<
The men closed in on me. "Kill him." "He's dead anyway. Let him suffer." They leave me on the ground and catch my horse instead. The last I hear are the sound of a squeaky voice: "Well done boys. Now we're rich." Darkness fills me.

(To be continued)

Very nice. Your storytelling-form definately enhances the mood.

I especially liked the tidbit about the tavern. Posted Image

Quite OK. I hope you don't it upsetting -- but I've always found stories told by "I" a bit dull. But this one was still quite enjoyable.

rUmbler-

Nice story. Interesting story telling form, though not neccessarily my favorite. I'd like to see how it works out in later parts.

They're also a pain to integrate, if it's a team story...
