yeah

perhaps someting like Vegastrike, only MUCH better... (And possibly with an engine that doesn't crash if you use it with a ATI Rage Posted Image )

Ares that will run natively under OS X is what is needed.

Dear Hopeless WebBoarders,

I just joined this thing after being dissapointed that there were no Ares Pulgs for so long. I have been making little plugs for my 12 yr old brother for a while, and while none of them are all that great the possibilities in this Hera system are endless. I used a graphics pack someone created, but have exausted it. Now, looking over these posts all I see is a bunch of hopeless apathy. Why don't we do something about it. I won't have access to a computer until July but I say we form some sort of plug-in producing group for ares.

I have been going to the site monthly hoping someone would take a page from the EVO book and create a star wars plug for Ares. It really is the ideal engine for such a thing. I would have done it years ago, but I don't know how to make sprites. Does anyone on this page know how? Is anyone willing to make them or teach me how to? What would I need to purchase to make my own sprites? Can I copy them from other files (like the SW sprites from EVO)? Once we get the basic framework for this new pulg together we can all create missions and add on to it. I think that a large plug in project like that would have the potential to revive the Ares community. I know I haven't played Ares in a while largely because there aren't any interesting new plugs to use it in. If anyone has any expertise in the sprite field definately E-mail me at Isaac_Ross@yahoo.com. If you are interested in the project and would like to help out you can E-mail me there too. Together we can make things happen if we stop all the whineing and just do it.

Interesting. I happened to come take a look on a whim, and the first topic I see is of interest.

I doubt that Ares will have any sort of revival, unfortunately, no matter what sorts of plugs get made.

Of course, I'd like to see more plugs for the sake of more plugs, so I'll see what I can do to help you.

The models for Ares's graphics were made with a program called "Strata 3D." Looking at www.strata.com, it would appear that it's now "Strata 3Dpro." There's a trial version for download at http://shop.strata.com/?Product=83

The older downloadable trial version of Strata 3D was enough to make decent graphics for Ares, if I recall, though it took a long time to render all of the images at all of the necessary angles to put them into Hera.

It would probably be easier to use ResEdit to take the graphics from EV Star Wars plugs, change the background color, and import them into Hera. Doing that is quite easy and is well-explained in the Hera guide thing.

As far as helping with actually making the plug, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to decline. I still need to finish up what will probably be the last Ares plug I'll make before seeing if I'm interested enough in my plans for one for EVN to actually undertake the massive effort.

I would be willing to help with making levels, if the project doesn't drag on for too long...
Ares is fairly dead these days though, and all past group development projects seem to have died prior to completion.
Without an OS X version of the game I doubt that people will go back to it.

Well I'm glad to see there is so much interest. Again, I can't do anything with it until the summer (Starting around mid july and extending until maybe mid august) but I will contact you with questions when they arise and greatly appreciate the help you have already provided. I look forward to talking to you all agin then. Lets all hope they port Ares to OS X soon. I was very impressed with the possibilities of so relatively simple a game and hope that it can be ported.

Actually, I don't think Nathan Lamont is very interested in Ares anymore, and I would guess that Andrew isn't, either, so that makes a port to OS X quite unlikely.

yes, it is not likely. In my opinion this is really a pitty since ares is one of the best games ever! If they ported it to OS X I'm sure it would be a succes.

It's not entirely accurate to say that he's disinterested in "Ares". If you look at Starbase Defender (his most recent game), then you'll see that there are some definite connections (UNS, Zerbilites). But I don't think he's interested in the Ares engine.

I'll try to help with some revival. I'm learning the engine little by little via Hera. I'll be able to play again on GM in the summer.,..which is very soon...

For those who wonder who the heck I am, you'd probably reconize the name ExtremeSpeed.

They should port Ares. Alls we really need is new graphics, official missions, interface, sounds, and a few other things and 'poof', we got a new Ares. Maybe...just maybe...

If someone know enough about C++ and other coding languages, and if Nathan would actuallty release the source code (i doubt it). It MIGHT be possable but it would take weeks or even months to recode the whole engine.

Unless someone is willing to make a clone of Ares for Windows from scratch, which might support better stuff then for mac.

I STILL LOVE THIS GAME! But my mac is too slow and it broke down, so no fun for me. =(

Pascal is dead. It is only used to introduce coding, it isn't actually used to program real programs anymore. I personally know some C++, and Java. So with some extra reading, I could probably do it.

that'd be great. I'd help you myself but i have only just recently started learning it. But as far as I know, then we could compile both a OS X and a Windows version. Also, I could do some graphics (hopefully) or some missions.

Have you noticed that when I say something about this board, like "It lives!", it does the opposite?
