In your opinion, which race would you prefer: Sals or Auds? Why are <insert race> better? Feel free to post anything.

My opinion is that Sals require tactics and piloting skills, and therefore, I prefer Sals. Also, their ship designs are spiffy and they have cloaking fields.

I prefer Salrilians due to the increased strategic level provided by the stealthfields.

Salrilians look cooler.

I agree with everybody else, so far. And I don't see how this subject could spur a debate.

It's due to the general sluggishness of the Ares webboards. Posted Image

I know that the Auds suck, but in a 2 player battle an aud fleet's superior firepower and tech can easily take out a much larger Sal force. The real contest is element of surprise induced by a cloaking device.

<side note> On the subject of cloaks, I'm thinking of making a weapon in my plug that makes you cloak when you fire it </side note>

Well, if you surround your Aud HVD with several cruisers and maybe a couple gunships for added firepower, a Sal fleet will be hard pressed to defend. Especially since AI controled ships tend to go for the Aud holograms. Aud Carriers are nice if you can afford them, but not worth it unless you've got some serious resources.

I figured I'd play devil's advocate pick the Auds over the Sals for once. The Auds have an advantage over AI behavior; you can distract and destroy. Because of the decoys you can play a probability game-cruisers•3+otherships=number of availabe targets for the enemy fleet. Just do the math so your potential targets are greater than your opponant's fleet by about a factor of two. Thus you distract the fleet and pick the ships off while they're busy. You will most likely have to tangle with the other player's ship, but that's the fun part.

Well, as long as you match every Sal gunship with an Aud cruiser, you're set. You've got a resource advantage of about 6 per gunship/cruiser. You can use those extra resources to add some extra punch to your fleet.

Carriers, unfortunately, are inefficient against a Sal fleet; the fighters (= extra targets) may help your strategy, but most Sals concentrate on gunships, which are designed to wreck carriers. A much better bet would be a core of gunships, which you can use to mop up enemy gunships while you manoeuvre in for an HVD duel.

Unfortunately, if you lose the HVD duel, I'd guess that your fleet is pretty much shot. With a player HVD wreaking havoc on it, you'd soon lose your unprotected gunships - and your cruisers are a distraction, not a fighting force. If you win the duel, you should end up winning the battle, probably with minimal casualties.

In other words, if you can pilot well, you're really better off taking Auds. If you can only macromanage, you should probably take Salrilians.

Thanks for all the posts.

Yes, Auds are more powerful than Sals. You can easily defeat a small Sal battlegroup (i.e. 3-8 ships) with a single Aud cruiser. The holograms distract the enemy AI. But with Sals, you gain the element of surprise. And combine that with some clever tactics, and the opponent will be toast. (i.e. Opponent's planet is captured.)

Audemedons. I don't worry about losing my HVD. In many ways piloting a gunship is better.

I would prefere the Auds, their ships can send any Sal fleet running. I'ts amazing that thye Auds don't realize that they are more powerfull then their taskmasters and destroy the entire Sal race...

1) The Sals outnumber the Auds.

2) The game only reveals a limited glimpse of ordinance. The Sals' military tech goes way beyond ship-to-ship weapon systems. They're capable of doing some pretty nasty things to entire planets if they want.

Why, that would be an excellent idea for a plug... but I don't have much time to work on plug-ins these days.

I have beaten lots of Aud opponents with Sals. In my opinion, Auds are for total n00bs who only cares about advantage.

Yet another glimpse into a backstory that I know nothing of.

You were probably playing noobs, and thats why you won. Against a competent opponent, auds are always going to beat sals under one condition: You dont get fooled into letting a sal transport land on your base (I love this). Sals just -dont- have firepower. Gunships and carriers are nice against other races, but when your facing someone whos cruisers and gunships shoot almost what your HVD shoots, its over. Sals win for coolness factor though.

OK, you're half correct, Pyro. I didn't beat many people in Sals VS. Auds. But I did beat almost every opponent in Sals VS. Sals. Nice, close match there Patrick. Posted Image And yes, it was an official MaG match. I lost, 2-1.

He really had a great backround in Ares, shame not much of it was in the game.

Would it be possible for you to potentially make a simpletext document with the information in it, and submit it to the addons? Every tidbit of actual Ares storyline I hear is great, but we don't get many tidbits.
