I hate to sound newbie-ish, but is joining TNT similar to joining TAG, where you just play a game with a member of the club and they see how well you do?

Yes you can play either me or Admiral. If you do want to join go on GR and look out for someone with the TNT tag in front of their name. They'll tell you what to do.
