Do you like AI's that are stupid, or would you prefer a more advanced, skilful AI?

For me: Stupid AI's. They're more fun to play with.

The AI doesn't have alot to do with the difficulty, the plugin maker compensates to make the level as hard as he wants. But if he's compensating for a stupid AI, he'll give the computer an advantage in ships, and for an intelligent AI, less of an advantage. There's the same level of difficult for more ships to annihilate. Also, the AI will probably affect the player as well, making his own forces as competent as the enemy, thus creating no difficulty at all; merely raising the bar.

That depends. Adjustable AI offers the best of both worlds.

Not true. You seem to be forgetting that, in addition to the _ship_ AI, there's a _player_ AI. Theoretically an intelligent player would do anything possible to protect their transports, but they're pretty easy to take out in Ares. There are other examples, but I have to go.

I'm talking about the sheer driving pleasure of knocking out many ships in a row. For examples, look at Iron Fist. Slug knows how to make levels fun.

Wellllll, it depends on the situation. Ares AI is sufficient and when its not you just up the number of their ships(always works:-).
However i find that certain times Ares AI can be lame. To beat an Ares AI just zoom around and around them and shoot at their backsides. The monty python trick has worked a few times as well.
If this was fixed then the AI would be Very hard to beat.(unless you got a gateship and gave the AI a little fighter;-).
A sarilian carrier would always cause me trouble though...

I agree with Sundered. However, if adjustable isn't an option in a game (like most games), I'd go with advanced.

Advanced AI with some more cunning tactics than simply build the right kind of ship,

i.e. Surrounding you and then sneaking in a transport.
