I've been spending about an hour decoding the lettering on the Ishiman briefings, and I'll post my findings here. Big warning: There is no difference between an Ishiman S and T, and an Ishiman B and J. Other than that and a couple phonetic differentiations, it's all English in their letters. It should also be noted that sometimes the Ishimans abbreviate a name to its first four or eight letters.

If you want to figure it out for youself, continue looking at a new clue until you have all the letters. If not, I'll have a [url="http://"http://caalaklael.tripod.com/cheatsheet"]cheatsheet[/url] available within a couple days.

And here I was thinking that Nathan Lamont had just copy-pasted a bunch of random pictures to make those. Now I'll have to open it up with ResEdit and try to figure it out.

Actually, I just noticed it accidentally- that the second word in the Ishiman cruiser and the second word in the Gaitori cruiser were the same. Then I noticed a bunch of other stuff which just couldn't be coincidental, at sat down to study it. On a Sunday too Posted Image

The Cantharan Schooner is another odd, one, but a little... strange...
I haven't had enough concentration to translate Thrntz's; it seems to start out with "By order of his royal..." Apparently the Obish have a monarchy (or constitutional monarchy, as I would expect)

Aagh! Now I have to find out what "Gaitori fighter" translates to! If you hadn't mentioned it, then I would not translate it. If you don't want sonebody to do something, tell them to do it. If you want them to do something, then tell them not to.

OK. Now I see that it is sick. Never mind. Why did you spend so much time trying to decode that tiny print? The pixels make it almost impossble to see...

I can't seem to translate the smaller writing on the Gatori fighter. Too small. Too blurred. What does it say? (I WOULDN'T have tried to translate it except you talked about it)

However, the bigger writing on the Gatori Fighter looks like "Have a Ham Sandwhich"!

I also just translated the big letters above the orbital shipyard thing, and it says: Urbital Shipyard. Not exactly good grammar, but that's what is says according to Pallas Athenes translation.

Which mission briefing has an info picture for the Gaitori Fighter? I don't remember ever seeing one...

It doesn't show it in the actual game, but there is one. Check the Ares Scenarios file using ResEdit or Resorcerer.

Some of them just don't work. But what I've given works at least 95% of the time.

Good, but don't assume that since the letters are adjacent in our language they will in others- I can think of no reason why E/F, M/N and V/W would be adjacent. I'm creating an english version of the Obish alphabet (I'll make the Obish characters too eventually), but I've eliminated 3 or 4 redundant letters and added about 5 more that have no reason to be letter combos.

You're still not going far enough. Why assume they'd use letters at all? One of my species concepts uses bends in a curve. Each curve (or rather spiral) is one thought.

Thoughts are done with the word concerning what you may be thinking or its picture in the mind.

Pictures can be done as pictures.

Words have particular phonetics attached to them.

The Obish letters, so far, are entirely phonetic.

Ergo, the letter is related to the thought.

You're using letters of a sort anyway.

I know that not all letters in alien alphabets would corospond exactly to our letters, or even if aliens had letters at all. I don't have enough time to create a whole new language, so the stuff that I did do was the best I could make.
