As a very regular player of EVO, I am used to the basic operating system of the ships in Ares, and was REALLY looking forward to playing it, but i find the ships in the first few missions sluggish and a bitch to control. That;s alright tho coz i'm not used to the game.
However, I'm no wimp, but I've been wasted on the early mission that involves destroying radars while avoiding enemies SO many times that I got bored of the sluggishness and my inability to avoid death that I've stopped pursuing progression in favour of registering EVO and playing that, and polishing up my Quake3 skills. Which currently suck also but then i did only just get it.
Is Ares worth pursuing if I'm getting bored so soon? I am a *devoted* fan of EVO but this game has comprehensively failed to grab me so far...
Feel free to email coz I'm an irregular user of these web groups. I *do* read the alt.games.ambrosiasw group tho...

Ares is worth its price. For level 2, the Ishiman heavy cruiser is fairly maneuverable. Destroy the relay dishes in order so that the Obish ships will help you after you destroyed the 3rd dish. More practice will help you outmaneuver the Gaitori gunship's tracking weapon. The key is in making 90 degree turns when the weapon is close. If you really are having a lot of troubles with it, consider luring that gunship as far away from the 3rd relay dish as possible. Then hyper jump to the 3rd dish and emply your arsenal.

They give ammunition to America's enemies and pause to America's friends. They encourage people of good will to remain silent in the face of evil."

Ares doesn't run sluggishly on my comp- What computer are you using?
The Heavy Cruiser is the most manueverable ship you get, so if you can't pilot that, well... Forget about playing Ares, I'd say.

well, if u wanna cheat, there is a glitch, just bypass the 1st and 2nd stations and kill the 3rd. the obish escorts will pop in a give you some help.
by the by, WTF kinda EVO player were you if you couldnt dodge those shots in that level? the heat-seekers of the gator gunships are easy to ditch, they cant make as thight turns as the heavy cruiser (which by the way, is my favorite ship) also, jsut go up to the gunships and tear em open, they are as weak as soda cans with rockets mouted on the side for propulsion, they suck. anyway, just kill the 3rd station and let the escorts do all of the work, this wont exactly do much to improve your game, but at least you will get to try a different level. also, if you want some practice for dodgeing, take out the 3rd station and then fall back from all of the ships/stuff in the region. take control of one of the escorts and disable the station, it can be difficult for a beginner, but after a while, you will be able to take on a ton of ships at once.

Thanks for advice from folk. Frankly, seeing as I was playing at about 3am every time, I don't htink my reactions were up to much. Didn't really give it a fair go and the ships don't move in exactly the same way as the ones I fly in EVO. Have played a few more missions in now but I think there are other games that I like more...
