How do I make a weapon that shoots an "electric" beam that bolts from ship-to-ship in the enemy fleet?

The only way to do this is to make the beam a one-hit kill I believe...Just make it create another beam object when it expires. The new beams will just continue to target the original target until it's dead, and then jump to another ship.

Simply select "Bolt Object to Object" in the "Special" panel.

It's impossible for a beam or bolt to permanently target an enemy ship. It targets the closest object possible.

I don't believe that's correct. The beam will, in my experience, target the targeted object till its age runs out, rather than switching targets. Also I believe he meant a "chain lightning" bolt which would hit an enemy ship and then generate new bolts which would bounce around the enemy fleet.

Like splash damage? Some kind of "bolt web?"

Hmm, I see. Make the bolt create an invisible object on collision. The object will fire another bolt, which will hit another enemy, and so on.

no, it won't. when the invis object fires its bolt, it will target the closest enemy ship which will be the ship that was originally hit.

Hmm, might it be possible for the invisible object to be "launched" like a fighter, a modedrate distance, before firing the next bolt? It wouldn't exactly be ship-to-ship, but it would create a random shockwave in the fleet.

My other idea was to use the "Change object type" action, converting the ship which was hit into an identical copy, only altered so that it posessed a lightening beam (and no other weapons). If there was a way to convert it to a friendly unit in the process, it would fire on the other ships in the fleet, after which you could have Hera re-convert it to an enemy ship of standard stock. The process would repeat, having each ship fire upon the next, and you could probably use a counter to limit the chain reaction to 5 or so.

That last thought is a bit risky, as I'm not sure you could pull it off with Hera in its semi-unfinished state, but its worth a try.

Think "Thrall's Chain Lightning" from WarCraft 3

heheheh, I made a weapon that tried to do this once. Instead of firing lasers (aud carrier beam type) between ships, it reflected back upon the target faster and faster until it was destroyed. After it had destroyed the target, the next ship within range got hit and soon the fleet was gone. The only way to escape it was to a) engage hyperdrive :P be in a really fast ship.
It was exceedingly fun to use and I believe I gave the instructions for making it to darkk or someone...

You did. It's being used in the Jjaro fleet as we speak.

Speaking of the Jjaro,
when is that plugin actually being released?
