Wow. Sorry I didn't notice that you said you updated your file. I like the Bomber sprite.

Rushes off to make changes.

Rushes back to web board...

Ok that's done. If you want to see how a Gaitori and Ishiman fleet match each other try the "Space Race, The Motion Picture" file.

Some time ago, I went in to the living room of my house armed with only a pencil, paper, and 3 hours worth of Star Trek episodes. This is my report for the evening:

Ishiman:

Fighter: Photon Beam
Bomber: Dual-firing Photon Beams
Schooner: Turreted Photon Beam, Photon Pulse
Cruiser: 2 Photon pulses, Photon Wave
Escort: 2 Photon pulses, Astro pulse
Gunship: 2 PK beam, astro pulse
Carrier: PK beam, turreted astro pulse
HVD: 2 pk beams, 2 astro pulse cannons, Superstring Pulse
Battleship: 6 missile tubes, fullerene pulse

Photon beam: Damage 10, range extended
Photon pulse, damage 15, (good range)
Photon wave, damage 20, travels through ships (short range)
Astro pulse (lightwave pulse), longer range, ordinary version fires less quickly
PK beam, damage 30.
Superstring Pulse, d = 100, like the fusion pulse but longer range
Concussion missile, d = 100 or 200
Fullerene pulse, d = 200

Major changes include making Ishiman ships less Federation/Klingon looking and more Romulan. While many of us may regret this, the time for tears has not yet come. As my sketches show, they look nice, and I have sketched all the Ishiman ships. I will not be able to get as much work done this week as I would like, as it is a school week.

Here is a short arcade-style level complete with mission briefing and map triggers.

Comments? My record for winning is shown in the winning dialogue. There's a prize for anyone who can beat it. (This prize is actually just the satisfaction that they beat me at my own game, but anyway...) Posted Image.

[EDIT]
Updated link, and I'd just like to say that my new best is 1 minutes 12 seconds Posted Image. See if you can beat that.

Also, I would like to make a statement regarding cost in AE. All ships will be more expensive, especially the cruiser which will have it's price upgraded from 1000 to maybe 1400 units. To make up for this, the resource generating value for the races will now be 1.25 instead of 1.00. Planet and bunker generation rates will stay at 1, but there will be a new planet type, the gas giant, which will be 2. As you can see, this will steer focus more on fighters/bombers instead of just having cruisers+ fighting.
[/EDIT]

[Second EDIT]
Ok, I just finished it on 1 minute 4 seconds... If you can finish it on 1 minute or below, take a screenshot, post a link to it here, and I'll email you the entire beta of SETR.

Slug, I desperately need your knowledge on the time setting for AE, which I take to be the Boodan War and then some. Please compose a document and email it to countaltair@yahoo.com.au

Ahh, sorry brook, didn't see your plug. Checked it out just now. Interesting, the Gaitori are not to be trifled with. But my new plans do not involve the weapons you have put in the Ishiman ships. As for them, we'll see how enjoyable my weapons scheme is. I'm introducing new weapons because I want this to be more than an Ares rehash with new level settings, but a kind of TC. I'll see about modelling the new weapon sprites, and grabbing some good sounds for them, though if you have any sounds, don't hesitate to upload them.

What 3 episodes did you watch?

So you want a heavy fighter and a fighter. I still think a Bomber should have some type of bomb.

Episodes that had Romulan, Federation, and Klingon ships.

I classify a bomber as a ship that deals a payload far in excess of it's own ability to cope with such weapons. The Ishiman bomber does have the ability to cope with it's own weapons, but to a very small extent. For it's price, and class, it does a heck of a lot of damage. It also needs protection from fighters to survive.

I'm modelling the schooner now. Whether I can finish it tonight depends entirely on my coffee threshold.

57 seconds! unfortunately i don't have a screenshot, when i hit command-shift-4 to invoke snapz it just went to the title screen without taking a picture.

Oh, and i'd be glad to help with AE.

But by your definition it is not a bomber then. I envision a Bomber as something that will never be built at planets. It would only come with Carriers and would launch a bomb like thing. Your design makes a great heavy fighter but it's no Bomber.

I might have a collection of sounds somewhere. I'll have to dig it up. It was some group of Cds that had lots of varied sounds.

Are you going to make the briefing text pictures to go with each ship?

Are we planing to remake the original Ares missions and add the new ships and graphics or just stick to the past? I think one long plug telling the past retelling the present with better graphics and into the short term future would be cool.

How are you beating that mission in that amount of time? I can't do it even if I cheat and build Cruisers.

One last thing. Are there going to be any destruction animations for the larger ships?

We will make new levels, but the explosion graphics will be the same for the forseeable future.

If I say it's a bomber, then it's a bomber. Don't argue with me Posted Image.

Surely you have more to say about AE than that.

okay, let's say we want a destruction animation of 6 frames. Now, we'll need one for every angle the ship is facing (we don't want a ship to suddenly jolt around while being destroyed and face the same direction each time, do we?), so that's 6 x 20. That's 120 frames of destruction animation for EACH ship. That makes Ares require a massive amount of memory just for a quick 6-frame animation. Not quite worth it, is it?

* * * * *

As for ships, I've finished the cruiser and fighter for the Gaitori Empire:

The fighter: Posted Image (full-sized image here)
The cruiser: http://www.slugsoft....ruiser_spin.mov (.mov should work now)

Keep in mind, the Gaitori Empire back then was about as powerfull as the Elejee are during Ares.

as far as plot is, I've emailed the good Count.

Your design is pretty cool, I really have no objection to having totally new Gaitori sprites if you want them. I think Brookeview meant a generalised explosion like the normal one but different from Ares.

Thanks for the storyline... reading... Hmm.

You didn't mention the Ishies, were they very seperate from the mainstream events of the time? In any case, Cantharan seems to be the logical choice for the player's viewpoint. I wonder if anyone else would like to join the AE project for purposes of graphics?

Do you know anything special about the technological stats of the races? The Audemedon it seems would be at the top of the technological pecking order, if not the political influence one.

No I meant the ships blowing up like slug said. We should have a destroy action for the largers ships that makes them sizzle before the final big explosion.

I would also like a copy of the long lost plot of Ares. Send it to brookeview2@mac.com

Nice pic slug. You should enter it in the Graphics contest.

At the time, the Gaitori were what the Elejee are during Ares. They could easily have beaten the Audemedons if they applied themselves.

I've just finished the Ishiman Schooner, it should be available for download, as well as another arcade plug, tomorrow.

That's good. I look forward to seeing it.

Whoops I finally remembered that we sold the CD with all of the sounds on it about a year ago.
