Just something that interests me, where did Nathan get / how did he make all the sounds he used for Ares? The ability to make classic sounds like lepton beams or Onas pulses would make my job (and no doubt others) much easier, as at the moment I am reduced to scavenging among programs. Does anyone know any sound app which can do all this and is absolutely free?

Nope. However, I did find a shareware app to do similar things - it's $40, but it's got a 15 day trial period, and if you're the unscrupulous type you can always delete your prefs.
Anyway, it's called D-SoundPRO ( http://www.d-soundpro.com ) and here are a couple things I made with it:

I also made 7 really good Launch Bay sounds. Interestingly enough, that number seems to coincide with the races in M:InvŅ

What others can travel so far into so many universes yet remain so deeply rooted in their own?

Many of the sounds originated from commercial sound effects libraries (which I purchased from Sound Ideas) -- of those, however, almost none were used without considerable alteration.
To edit them, and to create new sounds, I used an old copy of SoundEdit. It can generate waveforms and do pitch bending.
If I were doing it again today, I might use kinkybeep for a lot of my source material: http://www.venus.dti...daka/homee.html
Not free, but only $10.
You can also buy individual sound effects from sounddogs.com for a few bucks a pop I think. They have a large library of professional sounds, many of which you may recognize.
You can use the free SoundApp for converting from various formats.
I haven't tried it, but for an editor take a look at Jasmine: http://www.kumulipo.com/
it appears to be free for now.
These and other interesting programs are listed at download.com.
