(Before we go on, quick synapsis:
TOS: Never really seen it
All movies, Vgr: Great
TNG, DS9: Hated them)

So maybe "about and empire" wasn't what I meant to say. I'm not sure, but I think I meant "empires," since there are conflicts between them.

Hmmm... the series' weren't guided by a single plot most of the time, which is one of the things that makes them interesting. The movies are of disjoint plots (most of the time), which means they don't use a plot for 6h straight. However, the smaller plots in the smaller lengths of time correspond to the plots' remarkability. Have you seen STVI? If you have, you'll have to admit it was a great plot. Then there is the STII-STIII "Spock Dies" plot. If you have any respect for Star Trek, you'll think that's a good plot too (and about as realistic as Star Wars)

Something I meant to say: Actually, the video of the Genesis sequence from STII was CGI, a decade or two before CGI even became commonplace.

Star Trek V1 - The undiscovered country......That was the one with the plot to assasinate Chancellor Gorkon and the Federation President, right? Meh, that was alright I guess. I'll admit the Wrath of Kahn was good, but Star Trek III was utter rubbish, as was I, V and VII.

Also, when speaking about Star Wars I'm always referring to the original trilogy, not 'Episode 1', for plainly obvious reasons.

Well, the plot in STMP wasn't good, but they did have some pretty good special effects - the scenes going in, the IKS Amar being excised at the beginning.
I don't remember STV too well; it was not too bad of a plot, but they executed it fairly badly.
By STVII you mean Generations? I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book. I think it was mostly an excuse to get Kirk in one last time without being repetetive. They did the same with Scotty.
STIII was, in all actuality, a plot hastily contrived to resurrect Spock. However, I would have to say that it was no less realistic than "The Force."

I think the best ST movie ever was the one where they went back home to save the humpback whales. I think it was ST 5, The voyage home?

Yeah. Special effects; good. Plot; bad, and boring. The movie just wasn't executed quite right...

Eh, still, it's one of the better movies around the time it was released. Not only that, but almost anyone, no matter what their age, can watch it because it ain't that violent and doesn't contain a lot of profanity.

True, and besides, without that hastily contrived plot, we wouldn't have Spock back! Always look at the good side my friend...

You DO realize that Star Wars: A New Hope came out in 1976, do you? It revolutionized the special effects industry, and was better than anything else out at the time by far.

Which SFX techniques used in Star Wars are still used? I can't think of any specifically.
Now, Most starships in today's environment are CGI. What's that? Star Trek used CGI even back then? Hmmm... Genesis torpedo simulation, and maybe the IKS Amar as well.

Also, STMP and STII were before ANH. STIV was 1976, coincidentally the year they traveled back to.

And anyway, if anyone says that a couple of the Star Trek movies were bad, we can point out that Star Wars didn't do so well either *coughepisode1cough*
