I'm currently about to embark on the really-dang-expensive stage of my education.

Places I appled (in order of how much I wanted to go there):
MIT - Rejected
Stanford - Rejected
Cornell - Rejected
Georgia Tech - Accepted
UNC - Accepted

For how much they cost, the above list is in order as well.

Well congratulations Darkk. I won't be going to college for a long time so I don't know the experience.

Which one are you going to go to? Georgia or UNC?

Considering Georgia Tech comes far above UNC in order of preference (if I'd needed to research Cornell, it might have come in above that), I'd say Georgia Tech.

It's always worth applying for the exclusive stuff, even if you're not going to go there. I'm probably going to apply for Stanford as well, though my Aussie education puts me on the back foot.

Congratulations on the Unis you got accepted to. Now there's only the choice of which to be made.

Not too hard a choice. UNC's only on there because I needed a school I KNEW I could get into. UNC's a state school, anybody living in NC with a 3.0 GPA pretty much cannot be turned down.

Mmmm, the mysteries of the American education sytem... GPAs and SATs and APs and GMATs... the enigmatic UAI calculations of the Aussie Unis must pale in comparison...

GPAs: 0-4.0, APs: 1-5, SATs: 200-800. I've never even heard of a GMAT.

Of course, now it's the extracurriculars that can make or break you.
Those don't even really have a number on them at all!
Well, there is hrs/week, hrs/month, days/month, and stuff like that, but it's
quality as much as quantity.

or in my case i get to add one to all of them, which rocks.
AP- advanced placement. College cradit courses, if you want these to count in a US college you will probably have to take an ap test to count them, 3-5 is pass, 1-2 is a fail (i think)
SAT- I do hope you know what the SATs are, the SAT is a standardized test testing your skills. You can score a total of 400-1600, or less than 400 if your dumb as a brick. (a brick would score a 400 mind you, im not kidding)
I also have no clue what GMATs are.

Yes, I know the SATs, at least. A glorified IQ test, I thought when I sat it. It doesn't measure what you've learnt at school at all. Though I suppose the SAT IIs might do that a little better. And GPAs. And so forth.

The Australian method is comparitively simple. You study for subjects. Each is 2 "units", though some can get extended to 3 or 4 "units". You sit "assessments" over the course of the final year, each worth a certain percentage of your final mark. Then you sit an exam, worth a large percentage. They add the percentages up, that's your mark out of 100.

The universities take the marks from your top 10 units, work some magic on them, and you get your University Admissions Index number, also out of 100.

13 years of school, boiled down to one single number... slightly worrying, actually.

Just one more lovely thing. Both the colleges I was admitted to, including the one I just sent off my deposit for, are in the heart of Oak country. I have oak pollen allergies.
Final exams are held in spring.

I hope I'll be able to see my exam papers.

As for the SATs, they really aren't that good an indicator. The SAT II subject tests, are however pretty good. Some colleges will give you credit for a course if you can do well enough in the SAT II that goes with it.

I managed to get an 800 (highest possible) on my history and physics tests. The physics test description said something about "due to the fact that not all physics courses cover the same things, some parts of the exam may not count." So it might be possible to miss questions on the physics test, and still 800 it. Something like 16% of those taking it got an 800 on it, btw.

Some places count AP/IB classes as "extra" work above the normal, so they "weigh" the grades by adding 1 point to them. My district is currently debating whether or not they'll allow it. It does kind of help, as the extra-hard work you put in shows through, as opposed to someone that takes easy classes just to get a 4.0

Here, an A on in AP class counts as a SIX.
My GPA is almost to 5, despite the many non-advanced courses (foriegn language, Technical Theater) I have to take, and the occasional B.

We just have normal, plain old A, B, C, D, F. We don't really have a GPA system. Granted, mine is pretty poor because I'm a huge slacker, but I managed to fool the admissions officers somewhere, so odds on I'm going to Carnegie Mellon or BC. Though I think getting above par standardized test scores helped too.

Darkk. Go on GR!

I envy you. Raised grades like *that* would definately help my GPA...

I've still got a few years to determine where I'll go to college. Good luck at your new school Darkk.

I considered Carnegie, but I decided their English department had too much control. I'm not sure that was a good move, but ah well, GIT is a great school too, and cheaper.

Fix my GR, and I will. I won't connect in OSX, and I don't use 9 at all anymore (especially as I often have multi-day processes running).

As for Extracurriculars, I'm not big in that area either. I play Chess sometimes, but I'm not particularly good at it. I'm also in a quartet. Reliable sources say that there's going to be a fencing team next year, and intend on joining it. Swordplay   Posted Image

I get plus one GPA on ALL my classes because i am in a vangaurd-magnet program, unfortunatly, AP classes are still only 5 points
As for extracurriculars i got a little more involved this year totalling my extracurriculars to a writing-sumbissions-magazine-group-thing and the debate team and the internation space settlement design competition (<--- this is very fun and cool, i highly advise looking in to it for your own school)
The SATs really suck though, because i do badly on standardized tests (i only got like 87% on the PSAT)

Couple questions:
What organization runs it? NASA? Or is it something more international (INASA Posted Image)?
Is it a design for a Lunar Colony? Martian? Spatial?
Is it necessary to enter through the school? I could probably swing it through one of the science teachers, but I don't really know.
