I voted for the second option. At home, I don't habitually drink pop at all, but a good amount of the time I'll have water in front of me. Every now and then I'll drink bottled green tea, and I'll almost always get Diet, but that's as a flavor preference just as much as a health concern.

The time that I drink pop is at restaurants, but sometimes I'll just get water. Most diet pops do not taste good; the only ones I really like are sierra mist free, coke zero, and diet mountain dew. So if those aren't available, I'll just get regular pop. I'll also sometimes do the half-and-half thing with regular coke and diet coke.

If the place has packets of Splenda and Equal, I'll sometimes order unsweetened iced tea and sweeten it with a few packets of each of those. I avoid Sweet and Low (the pink one with the musical notes).

I laugh at your poll and its nonfunctional italics tags. Hah. Hah. Hah.

I haven't been able to drink pop for a while. Braces will do that to you.

You can drink "pop" with braces...

Your poll is kinda missing in stuff though. Do I ever consume food with artificial sweeteners? Yes, though not for health reasons, and I prefer not to.

So I guess number 4 would be the best...

Every artificially sweetened thing I've tried left an unpleasant aftertaste. I haven't really decided if I think they're unhealthy or not, as I wouldn't have them either way.

I could have sworn markup tags used to work in the polls. Isn't that how people put images in?

Yeah, the question really should read, "Do you choose to consume things with artificial sweeteners over things without?"

I don't know, but they don't appear to be working at the moment.

What's really weird, though, is the people who use tags in their member titles and never figure out that the tags don't work.

Almost never, though not for taste or health reasons. Fake sugar-like fake meat and bottled water-vaguely offends my sensibilities.

I didn't vote.

I like coke zero and can stand diet coke with a splash of something else in there (real coke, orange soda, something) to cut the diet aftertaste. I munch about a pack of Orbit sugarfree gum a day, and use Sweet-n-low in my tea, both hot and iced. I'm sure it's all going to give me mouth cancer or something and is thus quite unhealthy, but at least I'm not getting any fatter for it.

I avoid Sweeteners wherever possible. I think they taste horrible, and have way too many dangerous health risks attached to them. I drink 'full fat' coke and pop, but only in moderation. I think that's the best way.

Plus sugar tastes awesome :P

i don't eat artificial sweeteners mostly because i don't like very many sweet things (which means i don't really eat much sugar either).
i don't drink soda, and i don't eat candy, pastries (ok, very rarely) or ice cream.
it's not for health reasons, i just don't like it.

What about side dishes, or a nice salad? Don't you get bored of tabletized sugar?

I've yet to encounter an artificial sweetener that tastes good. Aspartame in particular tastes very metallic - it might work in a super-strong breathmint, but it doesn't work in a soda. Much better to stick to miracle fruit, in my opinion.

Aspartame tastes pretty bad to me as well. Have you tried ever tried anything with Sucralose (marketed as "Splenda") or Acesulfame Potassium?

Also, aspartame is the most tested substance in the FDA's history. If it significantly increased the risk of cancer, I think they'd have noticed by now. :P Cyclamate (currently banned in the US) and Saccharin are the only artificial sweeteners that have shown some evidence of being carcinogens, but the case for Saccharin is quite weak at this point.

There's this herb called stevia that's 300x sweeter than sugar, so you only need a few grains in a cup of tea or coffee or what have you.
Natural!

Edit: Well excuse me. 300 times, not 500.

Ha... I love how you call it "pop". It's "soda" around these parts.

I prefer regular soda over diet, but I will settle for diet when I can. My girlfriend, however, drinks diet because she much prefers it over the taste of regular. I think she's weird.

Also, I'm in reasonably good shape, so I don't have to worry about my sugar intake too much.

So give me sugar over artificial sweeteners any time.

Yeah, I think it's a midwestern thing to call it "pop". You live on the east coast, right?

Yep. It's definitely soda in the Philadelphia and New York City areas. I have heard it referred to as pop before, but it amuses me every time for some reason.

To me calling it "pop" makes you sound like you've travelled through a time hole from the 1950s.

Personally I dislike the taste, particularly of aspartame - saccharin and acesulfame K are less objectionable. The latter two don't exactly taste bad, there's just a missing taste that my mouth is expecting that they don't provide. I used to worry about the health risks but more and more I'm starting to think the aspartame-fearing people are mostly delusional conspiracy-theorists, there is very little evidence against it and it has been tested to hell.

Generally I drink full-sugar "pop" - mostly normal Coke or Irn-Bru.
