Tired of slow dial up pages? Think you can't get high speed? Then this isn't the thread for you! Instead, this is for users with firefox and a broadband connection. Using the following steps you can speed up firefox in ways you can't imagine. After doing this, I loaded up ASW in a couple seconds instead of the 10 seconds it used to take. Why it took 10 seconds, I don't know, maybe it's the server. Anyway!

1. In the address bar type "about:config". This will take you to a page where a bunch of variables and configuration setting values are listed. We are gonna modify a few.

2. Find the entry "network.http.pipelining". This can be done by using the little searchbar that show up at the top. Right click the entry and toggle it's value to "true"

3. Find the entry "network.http.proxy.pipelining" and toggle this to "true" also.

4. Next find "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and right click and "modify" this entry. Set it to around 30 for a decent increase, I set to 50 and saw a mcuh bigger increase.

5. Finally the last step to our process. Right-click pretty much anywhere, go to new and create a new "Integer". When it asks for the name, call it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set it's value to "0".

Congratulations! All we simply did was turn on piplines and changed how many pipes there are. The more pipes we have, the faster we go! And then the last value was to make the browser start doing things right away as it recieves data instead of waiting for larger packets.

So! If you follow my EXACT instructions, browse around. In some places, you won't notice a difference, in others, you will. Have fun!

Holy cow. The proformance enhancment seems so so but the bandwidth meter jumps off the charts when I use this. I might have to tone it down to 16 pipelines. Thanks though.

There was a topic about this in JT a while ago..... it can also be done in Safari, although I forget how.

Isn't there a standard that says good browsers should only use two pipelines so they don't pummel the server for connections?

Besides, the main delay with ASW is on the server side with SQL threading, so it ebbs and fades (because OS X gets suckier with MySQL as the server uptime increases) as the ASW server guy tinkers with configurations. The mods have been on his case pretty much every time the boards slow down.

I remember there being something called SafariSpeed on coolosxapps.com that nixed the minimum page load time of five seconds (?). But I think that'd be my limit on speed-increasers... I think too many people bombing a server for too many extra connections would ###### it up the arse.

Note: after kicking this around a little, I have found that it is only good on a straight connection. On a network it works really well when the bandwidth is up, but the browser gets really choppy when the badwidth is lower. So I have mine set at around ten which is noticeable for increases but less so for when the bandwidth is down.

It works great for me. It pummels the places with 50 pipes and brings everything for ASW in seconds. But maybe I should drop the pipes to around 20 or so.

Only if you have a limited bandwidth.

My bandwidth is pretty damn nice actually. We are using this Clearwire thing, and although we are supposed to be outside it's range (it's a Wi-MAX internet), we are dragging in 2.5Mbits a second. But I reset to 25 anyway. It was screwing with myspace.

Why do you need 2.5 megabits/second, anyway?

Or are you downloading anime?

I don't think my school even has that much bandwidth. And my Windoze-using friend is proud of the fact that he pulls 400k downstream off of that thing...

You got a fiber, T1, or Cable? Cause those are the only ways I know of.

Nope. All air. It's not even supposed to be working. The company claims the signal is not working yet, but we know they are running a test signal. The guy a couple doors up is the promotor in our area, so we are borrowing the demo modem until it becomes avaliable. Since he is promoting it, they gave him the high-end deal. The modem is the same, it's the whole configuration thingy. Whatever it is, it drags in alot. It is supposed to get 2.5 Mbits, but i usually pull in 2.

Fricken sweet. I've done some work with WiFi and it is nice. Didn't know it could haul in that much though.

Unfortunately my office's WiFi signal is drowned out by the signal from the cordless phones they use, so I have to be plugged in at my desk rather than on the office couch.

Hmm.

Does site admin have a problem with that mod on the school's T3 connection?

When I get home I want to see if I could rape MGF for the Doom III demo in less than five minutes. Or does this only work on webpages?

Depends on if they're uploading the file at such a rate.
