Bah. If you lived on the streets, you´d probably do the same.

They are still cool dudes.

How many of you have actually spent a large amount of time with homeless people?

Over my entire lifetime, I think I've spent 2.8 minutes with them.

I have...our church shelters homeless people from time to time, and I've spoken with several of them.

Gah! Go out and talk to them. They give you good lessons on how to live life. Seriously.
They tell you what they did wrong, and tell you not to do it. If there is anybody who can tell you how to not **** up, it is a homeless person. Plus, they're funny.

Heh, walking the 500 feet from my office to burger king last Friday some woman runs up to me pushing this kid in a stroller. She's like "Sir, Sir! - I have a question, if you say no, I'll understand, but if you say nice I'd really appreciate it. Do you have $3.00 so I could go buy saleen drops for my son?" I'm just thinking... "Booooooooze" but I just said, "$3? Sure."

Hope she wasn't just using the kid...

Yes, I wanted to go spend my $3 on boozing with a bum :P

Hehe...

As stated in the "Old" topic, I am Old. Well, compared to you younglings anyway. Turned 19 October 27th. SA and Zeke beat me but meh. I fart in their general direction.

I work at a teeny little government contractor called "KR Systems". In fact I'm wasting the last 10 minutes of the workday right now, posting to you. (Actually, I waste a lot of the workday on the boards here...) And I turn books into CDs, naming countless numbers of files and looking over thousands upon thousands of pages to make table-of-contents for them and to find errors - I think something like 65,000 since the summer...

For those who haven't spent any significant time with homeless people, I'd recommend doing so before making broad generalisations about them.

For those who have - good on you! Charity is great stuff. It also looks good on your college resumé.

Can those of us who have spent time with the homeless still make broad generalisations?

When I first met one my coworkers and friend, who goes by the name of Shorty, he was a hopeless alchoholic who lived in an old Chevy hatchback that had been abandoned in a field behind my one of my family's apartment complexes. He ended up getting run over by a car after having a stomach ulcer hemmorage on him in the middle of a street. After dying twice on the operating table and being brought back into health we hired him on as a groundskeeper at the complex where I work. He continued to live in a car for the next year (this time a working 1986 Ford Thunderbird) even though we were paying fairly well, until he was comfortable enough with his position to accept the discounted apartment that we had been offering him. As such, I figure that I have not only known a homeless person (and this is not my only interaction with them, it is just the longest lasting) but have helped him bring himself out of his position.

There's a guy around here who is a little, God! What is the politically correct term nowadys? Retarded? Mentally ill? anyway...he goes around to all the fastfood places on his skateboard, and he always wears bandages. Poor guy. His name's George. Very sweet. I know when I had swimming during the summer he came by and talked to us for a while. He's sweet.
