Ah, but you're forgetting the rest of the Armada - cruisers, carriers, and heavy destroyers. An integrated force will easily beat a one-trick pony.

And now you're suggesting that you build *more* expensive ships? You can immediately rule out Cruisers, as they're easily outmatched by Escorts any day. HVDs are also worthless in a role against Escorts, as you should be well familiar with rock-paper-scissors theory. The only ship that might be considered worthwhile is the Carrier, but when every Carrier faces five Escorts, I don't think you're doing too well on odds.

You're also forgetting - the entirety of my one-trick pony is cloaked. The one ship you need is your uncloaked Carrier, and we can hyperbomb your Carrier fleet out of orbit with no trouble at all.

Good lord. You're seriously suggesting hyperbombing as a tactic? How could you have sunk so low, Pallas?

That's just a theory. Enough well-placed hits by a good HVD pilot can take out quite a few escorts. And while you may be able to skillfully pilot one, you can't pilot them all at the same time.

Meh. The simple fact of the matter is, that the cost:effectiveness ratio is lower for the Escort than for any Cantharan ship. You can take out three Escorts with a Carrier, but I can send five to fight it. You can take out five Escorts with a well-piloted HVD, but I can send eight to fight it.

As for rock-paper-scissors being a theory - it's a theory that's been proven time and again. Human piloting will always skew results slightly, but what you'll notice is that the best ships are the ones that transcend a single role in the theory. The Human Gunship is both a destroyer and a capship; the Escort is both a squadron ship and a destroyer. These are the sorts of "one-shot ponies" that work, and you'll just have to deal with it.

Of course, if you're counting on the programmed ship limit, that's another matter entirely. But I trust you wouldn't depend on something like that.

And yet you're still assuming that we'd build just one class of ship? Even your "one-hot ponies" would have difficulty against a well-balanced task force. While you're bouncing off the fighters launched by the carrier, those gunships are tearing you to shreds. While you're outmanuevering the gunships, the fighters are nibbling at your flanks.

Do you really think that your massed, homogeneous force can defeat a well-balanced one?

Just pile all off your forces into two groups. Group A follows you and is larger then group B. Group B is attatched to your planet, flak drone or whatever. Always works for me.

It's unlikely that you would somhow manage to have all of your ships coordinate that well. Your fighters would rush out first, but rather than distracting the Escorts, they'd just provide you with a bit of extra shielding for the two or three seconds they survive the protopulse barrage. And "outmaneuvering" Cantharan Gunships is just a joke; with their turn rate, the battle would be half over before they were even facing the enemy.
