I can't really see D&D being a good family game. It's best to do it with friends that you can scream and yell at for a few hours and then not have to live with each other :P.

But maybe my group is just dysfunctional ;).

Mum can't play, and Dad never wants to, and I always have to be the DM because my sister doesn't want to.

I wonder if it would be possible to play DnD on a webboard...

Unfortunately, since I have no clue of how to play DnD...

1) Go to a gaming store. Not one of those video game stores, but a board game, card game, miniature game kind of place.
2) Grab yourself a PHB (Player Handbook) and some dice. You'll need a d4, d6, d8, d10, d100 (d10 that counts by tens), d12, and d20. It is recommended that you actually have at least 4 d6s and probably a second d8. You could also get one of those crazy d3 thingies, but a d6/2 works just as well.
3) Find some geeks. The geek geeks. The kind that know about D&D. Ask them if they can DM.
4) Get one of them to give you a character sheet, and roll a character. Roll something easy to start on like a fighter. Get help. Lots of help.
5) Play. Learn as you go.
6) ??????
7) Now you know. Too bad there's no profit.

I'm OK at being a DM, but I can't do time properly, so I have no wandering monsters or torches going out, or durations of spells.

My favourite part is trying to get the monsters to roll high enough to kill my sister's characters. Although she gets really pissed off when I do that. But it's fun to annoy her.

My little weakling bard died yesterday, so I rerolled another one and got two 17s and an 18, with the rest all 11 or higher. So I'm a very very strong bard now with power attack on my rapier +1, and precise shot with a composite shortbow +4 strength. Only people beating my AC now is the crazy dex rogue and the cleric in full plate. I actually forgot to use my bardic music on the final boss, I just ran in there and started swinging.

Sounds more like a swordsman or an elf than a bard.

Haha, but all my skills are in knowledges, performs, and diplomacy!

Yeah, it's unconventional, but not the strangest bard I know of. My friend has a Living Greyhawk character that's a half-orc bard with only 10 charisma, and 18 strength, wielding a greatsword. He doesn't have the ability to cast any spells, haha.

I've often tried to make bards work, but never got it down. My best character is currently a lvl 16 Half Orc Barbarian/Fighter/Ranger/ Orcish Blood Warrior. He's drawn from the deck of many things twice, suffered barely any bad stuff, and gained two major magical items, a stash of gold and 50,000 xp. The last one put me upto lvl 15, just shy of 16, with the rest of the party at 10/11. They weren't best pleased!

Now, however, the xp penalty is hurting a fair amount...

It's never good to have a party with vastly different levels in it. Ask your DM if you can roll up a level 11 to play until you all get to 14 or 15.

No kidding. It's not the cheapest hobbty. Nor is Warhammer.

I would like to play Warhammer someday, sounds like an interesting game. But far to expensive to enter the market. D&D is relatively cheap, by MTG and Warhammer standards. Yeah, you could buy every single book and pounds of dice, but all you really need is the PHB, and the DM to have the DMG and MM.

Believe me, it is. And always keep a ruler and a handbook so you can measure stuff and look up the special effects special units have - some people are ######s and will try to cheat.

I have a few figurines but I don't actually play. I say that they're an elite commando spec ops black team. They basically rock. :P
