24 isn't all that unrealistic (except for the fact that CTU isn't a real organization). The only thing I can think of that happened that didn't make sense was spreading the nerve gas through the natural gas lines in season 5. I mean, presumably it's organic, so it would get burned up on the way out of the pipes.

24 has a tendency to be half based on reality, half fiction so it can be tailored to tell a drama in "24 hours". A story arc isn't completely made up, there's usually some basis behind it.

I work in a government operation and my cubicle and computer, which are entirely unimportant, are more secure than all of CTU on 24. It's also very seldom that Jack uses the bathroom (he should probably get that checked out).

I can think of at least two bathroom scenes in 24 – one in season 3 where Kim is talking to Michelle about how well Michelle and Tony's relationship works out while their both at CTU, and another in season 5 where Chloe was contacting Jack, and she comes out of the bathroom and Miles demands to know what she was doing in there. ("Are you serious? If you really want to know, I'll write up a report for you.")

Besides, what do you think the characters do during the commercial breaks?

Half the time Jack walks into CTU after a commercial break to do something, he's had plenty of time to visit the bathroom before making his appearance on the main floor.
