Pfft, its much more fun to fight aliens without the tractor beam. Like defeating it in a modified scoutship.

Can a modified scoutship even pack enough fire power to bring its shields down?
You put what in my Power Mac?

It has been my experience that caps lock is a key you do not want to press while chewing on an alien ship.  For some reason, the tractor gets weak enough to allow the cruiser to turn when caps lock is on.

That's because the game is running at double the normal speed. The tractor doesn't get weaker, the Cruiser can just wiggle its way out at double the usual time (while your primaries do double the damage, etc.).

Get some speed upgrades and spacebombs and your set. I've done stuff like that, but never with such a small ship.

Usually I'd take on the Cruiser in a Kestrel with many torpedoes and missiles (I would keep the Lightnings in for their own sake). Most of the time I'd have the tractor beam, but I could do it without.

Spacebombs? Never had much luck with those.

Certainly, in the right situation. That's how I beat it before I learned of the tractor beam's existence (which I still haven't actually gotten).

I certainly hope you do not have a particle beam.

Though that is a cool weapon. (Yes, I had a Confed pilot once upon a bored time.)

A scoutship with a particle beam.... not bad vs. fighters. Might not be too bad against an alien ship, when combined with primary weapons and javelins-hacked-to-be-primary.... and a way to keep from shoving it too far away.

Hacks are no fun when you're in this business. The Scoutship would do fine against the Cruiser, as long as it evaded the seeker drones, and had plenty of fuel.
