Supposedly, brevity is the soul of wit. Unfortunately, the majority of one-liners are nothing more than rehashed clichés fit to test the nerves and tarnish the soul. As such, those with a true grasp of the niceties of repartée often feel compelled to resort to unsuitably cumbersome language, so as to avoid being tainted by association. Or "tarred with the same brush", if you prefer.
