Hmm, well since all the pirates are in large ships, why don't we make a smaller ship (that we put in convoys) designed for destroying the pirates?

I'm thinking something like a small, well shielded fighter with a single neutron blaster.

The weekend has come and gone (er...almost). Do we have our colony ship yet/government yet?

I vote to elect Patrick the President, and maybe Avatara or Pallas the Commander In Cheif of our militia. Other votes?

I was contacted earlier today - the colony ship probably won't be sent until next weekend, but he's starting the process of creating a government now.

I gave him UNSET as the name of our government, as well as a greyish color to identify us. He wanted a leader - I told him to put me down, but that we hadn't actually run elections, so I wasn't really an official leader.

Why "UNSET" and not "UNS" ? I notice there isn't a Sol system in the game yet. Perhaps you guys could be the ones to make it.

When I posted that, I thought the remaining 500,000 would be in by now.
Now that I know what I need to do, I should be able to set everything into motion as soon as the colony ship is paid for.

Ah, didn't quite realize we hadn't paid for it. Pardon me for being so insistant.

Pallas: What exactly does "UNSET" stand for?

UNS Expeditionary Taskforce - we got sent out from Earth on the Apollo 2200.

Oh, and the reason we haven't finished paying is because I was pirated right before I could pay 500K myself. So I haven't donated anything yet, and I'm not sure I will be donating all 500K, since I don't want to carry that much cash around. I'm going to set myself up in an Eagle (tomorrow!), and then I'll donate at least half of what's left.

Ah, yes. This is a good name indeed. One last thing: Why did you choose grey? Won't that be rather difficult to distinguish from the white? People won't be able to tell the difference between us and the next uninhabeted system on the map.

Well, it's a rather dark grey. #666666 to be precise. Besides, who cares if other people confuse us with uninhabited systems? *We'll* know where we are. If other people think we have them surrounded, so be it.

The admin seems to be not there until late Sunday. Then again, I have a friend who's been waiting for a week to get in.

I'm back and creating characters now.
Mag Steelglass, I have made your character, I hope (I thought that I had already).
Who is this friend that has been waiting? It is possible that I sent the confirmation to the wrong email address.

I'll have more details tomorrow. I think he tried to sign up with the nickname "Shadow" - and I don't have his e-mail address commited to memory just yet.

Thanks.

I now have a Jaeger. I've tossed the guns for an afterburner, an am sniper, and a cargo pod. How do I join our alliance thing?

Well, as the government doesn't yet exist, you don't. However, I'm hoping to have all of the money in by this weekend (finally...). I went for some "security" before making my donation, so I'm now flying a Raptor that should perform decently in close *and* long range combat.

As for the Jaeger configuration... does it work well? I'd never have thought to use something like that myself. I suppose it does give you speed to run and escorts for cargo, but I'd feel underprotected even with the speed and the burner. (My early config was a scout with two scouts, a runabout, and a shrike for escorts)

I don't know if it works well or not, yet, as I've not been attacked. Looking through the lists of ships though, there's only one kind that's faster than a jaeger. Some sort of 3 million credit cruiser thing. Although I have no idea how combat works.

The way it works is that the administrators take a look at the ships' stats and ignore them, arbitrarily choosing which is the superior ship by which one has the cooler name.

They then take the names of the ships and print them on a slug each, each ship getting assigned to the slug that most closely resembles it (for example, a Heavy Freighter would be a big ugly slug with three teeth, while a Jaeger would be Sonic the hedge-slug).

The two slugs (and their escort-slugs) then duke it out in the slug arena:

The Victor slug's assigned ship is then declared the winner.

Um...not exactly, Limax, but I like the pic.

Just briefly, combat is determined by your strategy (short, med, or long range), the strength of your weapons, the strength of your shields, and your speed. I think the computer has you take turns firing at each other until one of you blows up or decides to run for it. Take a look at the guide to get more info.

I was cruising around the Jagros system today and I saw poor little Volkov sitting there in his explorer with 33k. I had myself a hearty laugh and then promtly blew his ship "to shiny bits." I only got 16k back from the 200 he stole from me at the beginning, but I'm satisfied.

Pallas: If you are strapped for cash, I would be happy to donate 250k to the cause (as long as I am not pirated in the next few turns). You might also need to tap that money in order to hire the escorts around our colony ship. I'd recomend one large ship, like an attack corvette, and several smaller ships (heavy fighters, gunboats, and the like).

I'm not bankrupt in any sense of the word. But after buying a Raptor, cash goes out quickly and in slower - it's not a trading ship, it's a fighting ship. Donating 100K would work rather nicely, however, since I don't see myself working up all 500K by the weekend.

Nevermind what I said about a ship faster than a Jaeger. I was apparently not thinking straight when I looked at the ship I thought was faster. So that means the only way for a pirate to catch me, theoretically, would be to have another Jaeger with an afterburner, which wouldn't be very combat capable and thus would generally not see use by a pirate.

I didn't find anything in the guide about combat, so to discover if my configuration works I'll just have to wait until I run out of combat immunity and find out the hard way. In the meantime, I'll work on making some money to buy another ship with if it doesn't turn out well and to donate to the colony ship and purchasing our fleets and such.
